Have you ever been a member of a wine club?
Maybe you were paying a California company $$$$ to ship you wine each month.
Maybe you joined a wine club at your favorite neighborhood store.
Maybe your best friend would bring by a couple of bottles each month.

Although a lot of these clubs sound like a great idea on paper…they all have their drawbacks.
If you were receiving two wines shipped to you monthly from anywhere, six months out of the year you were receiving damaged wine. And you thought you just didn’t like the wine that they were picking. Truth is, when wine gets over around 85 degrees for any length of time it becomes heat damaged. We in the business call that “cooked.” A cooked wine has an entirely different flavor profile than it is supposed to, and never in a good way. Any time you order wine that is shipped to you; it sits in a non-air-conditioned warehouse for a couple of days and then has a nice trip all around the city on a non air-conditioned delivery truck. mmmmm Yummy, vinegar right to your door.
If you were a member of a wine club in which you picked up your wine at your favorite retail store, then you are already doing much better. We find that most of these programs start off really good and some of them stay really good. If you are happy with a club like this, then by all means stay where you are because they are becoming harder and harder to find. What usually starts happening is a drop in the quality of the selections offered. Retail locations often rely on in stock inventory to fill the wine club orders. If the store is big enough and they have a talented person selecting the wines then it is a great club and the wines will usually be an exceptional deal. Unfortunately, this is usually not the case. Club members often begin to find themselves receiving wines that no one purchased from the store in previous months so it was forced on the wine club members. Or worst of all one day you look up and the store has changed owners or has closed all together. I had that happen to me a few years ago and they were kind enough to continue to charge my credit card for two months before I could get it cancelled. Gee Thanks.
