De Vallois Reserve Cuvée Saumur NV, Loire, France
Sparkling wines are an inherent part of French culture and the French lifestyle. Sparkling wines
are produced in many region of France, the most famous being Champagne. Following
Champagne the most respected sparkling wine producing area is the Saumur region of the Loire River Valley. The best wines are produced in the traditional method referred to as the “Methode Champenois”, where the secondary fermentation that produces the distinctive bubbles and the taste takes place in each individual bottle. The wines from the Saumur region are attractively priced and present the classic celebratory mood of sparkling wines. The wines of De Vallois are produced in modern hygienic conditions using the time-tested traditional methods. The Grand Cuvée is aged for up to 36 months in the bottle to develop the fine bubbles and the distinct character and finesse of this sparkling wine.
The packaging on this wine is elegant, but with weight. The front label is a pewter like metal, This package would make an impressive gift.
Tasting Notes: This sparkling wine combines Chardonnay from the Cote des Blancs, and Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier from the Marne region. In the glass there is a beautiful slightly straw-colored golden hue, which is classic. The bubbles are tiny and steadily moving without being aggressive. There are complex aromas of caramelized white fruits such as peach, fresh grapes and white plum and essences of dried nuts and of acacia honey. The taste delivers a delicate and an aromatic fresh-baked bread roll richness from the yeast used to complete the sparkling process and this is followed with aftertastes of caramel and a lingering citrus.
